Department of Family and Consumer Sciences

The Department of Family and Consumer Sciences is an exciting place for you to study and learn. You can choose from six specializations, or concentrations, and five minor areas of study. In addition to these, the department also sponsors numerous organizations, conferences, and opportunities to learn outside the regular classroom.

The primary purpose of the Department of Family and Consumer Sciences is to offer you a strong, general Bachelor of Science degree in Family and Consumer Sciences, with an emphasis in one of six areas of specialization. You can specialize in Consumer Sciences, Dietetics, Family Relations, Fashion Merchandising, Food Systems Management, and Textiles and Apparel . In each of these concentrations, we strive to help you develop the breadth and depth of knowledge you'll need to participate in careers which serve individuals and families in a variety of settings. The knowledge base of this discipline includes concepts from the study of human development and social interaction, resource management, food and human nutrition, apparel and textiles, and shelter and design of the near environment. We focus on the interrelationships of people to their near social, economic, and physical environments.

 

 

Seniors Honored at Awards Brunch

Seniors in all areas of concentration in the department were honored recently at the awards brunch at the home of Mrs. Kathy Bates.  The brunch is an annual event, and includes all members of both the May and December graduating classes.  At this time, specific awards are presented for outstanding students in the various concentrations, as well as the outstanding student overall.  The Edith Wright Award of Excellence is also given to a student who has demonstrated particularly outstanding professional promise.

 

 Katie Rollins, a double major in Family Relations and Bible, received the Overall Outstanding Student Award.   Charity Calvin received the Edith Wright Award of Excellence.  This award is made possible by Dr. Deanna Tate, former professor in Family Relations, in honor of her mother.

 

Katelyn Johnston received the Outstanding Family Relations Student award Hannah Smith Stewart received the Outstanding Dietetics Student award. Jennifer Jackson received the Outstanding Fashion Merchandising Student award.
